RunVermont is committed to providing children and adolescents in our community with programs that promote fitness and inspire healthy and active lives. Under the umbrella of Ready. Set. Run! each of our youth programs targets an age group within the running progression.
RunVermont also offers additional opportunities for youth to participate in races and fun runs throughout the year, while also supporting other organizations that put on youth events.
Elementary school children have the opportunity to enroll in the Mini Milers program as either individuals or as part of a group. This spring program was established in 1998 to provide a blueprint to assist kinds in learning about making healthy choices, integrating healthy habits, setting goals and building self-esteem across time. The goal for participants is to accumulate 26.2 miles (the equivalent distance of a marathon) or more through making healthy nutritional and activity choices.
Middle school and high school youth and adolescents can enroll in the Junior Milers program, a 12 week program that culminates with each participate running in the Vermont City Marathon as a member of a 2 person or 3-5 person relay team. This program requires the commitment of attendance every Wednesday night leading up to the Vermont City Marathon along with commitment to participating in the relay portion of the race. During the program the participants learn about running and related topics such as nutrition, sports psychology, the musculoskeletal system, and pedestrian safety. Junior Miler participants learn about commitment, goal setting, team work, work ethic and of course having fun!
The Ready. Set. Run! Festival, formally known as Yam Scram, is held the day prior to the Vermont City Marathon in Waterfront Park in downtown Burlington. The Festival focuses on fun and participation for youth ages 4 to 14 with races ranging in distances from ½ mile to a competitive 2 mile timed run. In addition to the races, participants and their families can explore local vendors that have offerings that help foster the growth of the mind, body and soul.
