The RunVermont Board of Directors extends our appreciation to all race participants and their families for sharing with us your post-race thoughts about our handling and ultimately our halting of Sunday’s Vermont City Marathon. We will process all your feedback, both positive and negative, and use it to improve our processes going forward, as there’s always room to do better. As you know, we stopped the race approximately four hours after its start due to the Extreme Risk weather designation in accordance with RunVermont’s adherence to the American College of Sports Medicine’s published guidelines that address the heat risks of competitive events such as marathons.

This decision to stop the race did not come easily, and was fully supported by our entire Board of Directors. Further, our Board has endorsed the decision to provide official times to all runners who crossed the finish line within four hours and thirty minutes of the race start. Finally, as each participant signed our waiver to obtain a bib for Sunday’s race, acknowledging that there would be no refunds under any circumstances—including extreme weather, the Board of Directors unanimously has decided to abide by our policy not to issue refunds or discounts towards future RunVermont events.

The safety of each runner was paramount in our decision to stop the race, and we believe our decision prevented more serious medical issues. Most importantly, the RunVermont team was able to send all race participants home safely.
