It is never fun to get an email from a volunteer letting us know that they are not going to be able to make their volunteer shift. Usually--because our volunteers are absolutely amazing, altruistic, enthusiastic, and giving people--the email contains an incredibly valid reason for the cancellation, along with a heartfelt apology. The other day, we got the best iteration of this email. A volunteer reached out to see if it would be ok to cancel and instead participate because the volunteer's employer had decided to extend their commitment to covering their employees' registration fees at RunVermont races under the RunVermont Company Health & Wellness Initiative. We, of course, said that we would be fine on volunteers (see above when we said our volunteers are amazing) and did a little happy dance because there are employers in our community that are prioritizing creating opportunities for their employees to participate in races.

As a reminder, this is how the RunVermont Company Health & Wellness Initiative works:

  • RunVermont provides the company or organization with a unique registration code for employees, etc. to register for any of RunVermont's races (the company/organization gets to pick what is included)
  • The company/organization gets to pick specifications like number of uses and how long the registration code is valid for.
  • The company/organization circulates the registration code to employees, etc. to register on their own.
  • RunVermont sends, upon request, a report of who has used the registration code and for what race/event.
  • Employees have motivation to train and a bonding experience with their coworkers— especially if they are on a relay team together!
  • After the race, or at a predetermined time, RunVermont sends the company/organization an invoice for registration fees and the complete list of names of who has used the code and deducts $10 per registration (individual or relay team) if the code is used at least five times for one race and $20 per registration (individual or relay team) if the code is used at least 10 times for one race. These bulk registrations can then be paid for via check or credit card.
