Why I Run: Mary Dostie

in Why I Run

Meet 37 year old Mary Dostie from Milton, VT. She responded to my request for a Why I Run story, then almost immediately wrote back that her story wasn’t “elaborate” enough and she’s more of a math person. Maybe so, but I loved what she wrote. It’s simple and I know it will resonate with other runners…

For me running is many things: fun, exciting, challenging, and quite possibly a bit of an addiction.  With the craziness of balancing work, 3 kids, and all of the sporting activities, running helps me maintain some sanity.  Much better than any drug, running helps me relax and find some solace.  After running my first marathon it seemed to boost my confidence and helped me to tackle things I thought were too difficult.  I find myself using running as a point of reference when talking to my two older children about pushing through a tough practice or helping with the nerves of an upcoming competition. Hopefully they see the importance of trying your best, having fun, and finding passion for something you love doing.

I look forward to the KeyBank VT City Marathon every year.  It usually is a family affair.  Besides running the full (this will be my 3rd full VCM), I’ve run a couple 2-person relays with my brother-in-law and a 2-person relay with my one of my sisters. This year both of my sisters and brother-in-law will be out there in some fashion, although the distance is yet to be determined.  We all recently ran the Smuttynose Half Marathon in NH and Disney in January for the Donald (13.1mi).
