This year RunVermont is thrilled to have three talented interns working with us. Please join us in welcoming them to the fun and fabulous frenzy that is preparing for the KeyBank Vermont City Marathon and MVP Heath Care YAM Scram.
My name is Laurel Ganem, I am a senior at the University of Vermont, and I am probably the worst long-distance runner in the history of the world. If you see me at the gym, I usually look very lost (or I’m hovering around the water fountain because it’s the only thing I know how to operate). It’s not that I don’t enjoy athletics; I have spent almost every autumn on soccer fields, my winters on various ski mountains, and my springs playing lacrosse. When I told my family and friends I would be interning at RunVermont, they asked if my application had gotten mixed up with someone else’s. Did I mention I have a wonderful support system at home? The thing that they didn’t understand was that I did not apply for my internship at RVT because I was good at running. I applied because this organization embodies many of the values I consider most important to one’s life in general.
With a strong and community-oriented foundation, RunVermont provides opportunities that enrich Burlington public life not only physically but also emotionally. Whether you are running in the marathon or simply taking in the dynamic array of entertainment surrounding it, you are participating in something that embraces Burlington’s character. When I found out about the open position as a Communications and Operations Intern here, I jumped at the chance. Although this job doesn’t seem to really pertain to my background in film, my tasks at this organization are surprisingly similar to the steps necessary in the production phase of a film project. Just as any motion picture isn’t assembled in a day, neither is any RunVermont event. There are layers upon layers of work to be done in order to manage and host the programs we put on, and that is something I truly enjoy about it. I hope that my experience here will broaden my knowledge of the ins and outs of event planning and allow my organizational skills to grow. Although I am leaving the Burlington community in the spring, I have confidence that I will make valuable connections that I can always return to. Even though I only come in twice a week, I find myself constantly thinking about ways that I can promote or add to this company. It’s a fantastic environment with an earnest and kind staff, and I am thrilled to follow them in their celebration of athletics, community, hard work and the dedication of all our volunteers.
