Today we’re re-running a post from last year on how to use RunVermont’s message board (a.k.a. the  Relay Team Transfer Board). We used to run this post immediately after the Relay Lottery results were announced, but a few of you remarked that it would have been even better run before the results come out so that you can get familiar with it before the team-seeking frenzy begins. Smart cookies, you are.

The relay lottery results will go out in the next 24-48 hours.  If you have any problems using the message board, please leave a comment below. We’ll reply just as soon as we can; everyone will likely benefit from your question.

If you are looking for a team of your own, want to join an already established team, have a team to sell or are seeking additional team members, we encourage you to check out RunVermont’s message board, Running With It.

If you’re not familiar with how a message board works, I’ll walk you through it step-by-step here, then you’ll be off and running! [Click any of the images below to see them larger!]

First, get yourself to the message board home page by clicking here. It should look like this:

If you are new to the board you will need to register and create a username and password (without registering you will be able to see the forum, but will you not be able to post or subscribe to topics).

If you used the board last year but do not remember your username/password, click “Login” and request to have your password sent to you.

Back on the message board home page you will see a list of “forums” under the header KBVCM Transfer Board:

There are distinct forums for buying teams, selling teams, joining teams and seeking additional team members.

Let’s pretend you want to BUY a 2-Person Team. First, click on “2-Person Team: FOR SALE.”   This is the next screen you will see:

Anyone with a team to sell is encouraged to post that info here. The best way to stay informed when new teams are available for sale is to subscribe to an individual forum.  Click “Subscribe to Forum” and you receive an email every time a current team captain posts that they have a 2-Person team for sale:

Each entry on the forum is called a topic and represents someone who has a team for sale. Click on the subject to open an individual post:

You can contact the seller of the team by replying to the topic (click “post reply”) OR by clicking “PM” (stands for “private message”) or “email”. I recommend replying on the post AND sending a PM or email.

Now that you’re subscribed to the forum for people who are selling their teams, you should also post your interest in BUYING a team on the 2-Person Team: Want to BUY forum.  Return to the list for forums by clicking “KBVCM Transfer Board”, then open the 2-Person Team: Want to BUY forum.

Now, “create new topic” and indicate your interest in buying a team. Be sure to indicate how you would like people to get in touch with you (via post, private message or email).

Now someone selling a team can reach out to you.

On the flip side, if you have a team you want to SELL, you’ll want to post that team on the appropriate 2-Person or 3-5 Person “Team for Sale” forum. Be sure to indicate how you would like interested parties to be in touch with you (replying to post, emailing or via private message).

IMPORTANT NOTE TO ALL:

Once you’ve sold your team/found a team to buy and your transaction is complete, PLEASE take a moment to update your “want to sell” or “want to buy” post as SOLD or FOUND. This saves time for everyone.

To update a post, log-in to the message board and go the forum where you posted your team for sale or your interest in buying a team and open your original topic by clicking on the subject:

Then click “edit” in the lower right hand corner of the topic:

Finally, update both the subject line (to “team sold” or “team found” and the body of the topic. Click submit when you’re done:

Got it? Pretty simple once you get the hang of it.  You may also want to check out the other forums: For Runners, By Runners and Ask the RunVermont Staff.

Wondering what to do once you have connected with someone who has a team to sell you/wants to buy your team?  Instructions for transferring team captains, adding and deleting team members are all available here.

Please let us know if this was helpful or is you have questions.  We’re happy to help!

I created a username and password when registering, but then noticed that mostly people do not use their email as their username, so I would like to change this. How do I go about changing my username?

@suetokay: please email me what you wish to be your new username and I will change it for you.
