As part of their ongoing pre-race coverage, WCAX features running-focused stories fit to inspire and inform. This week’s segment features our Marathon 201 and Half-Marathon 201 instructor, Sam Davis, and Mike Knauer, the father of RunVermont’s graphic design and merchandise director, Kate Youlen.
In this “Going the Distance,” we look at the fastest growing distance in road racing– the half-marathon.
According to Running USA, the number of half-marathon finishers in this country has nearly tripled in the last 8 years. It’s also enjoyed a surge in popularity in the Vermont City Marathon. The race officially added so-called 2-person teams in 2004. Today there are more than 700 of them, meaning 1,400 people running the half-marathon.
One of those people will be Mike Knauer. He’s attempting the half-marathon for the first time later this month in the KeyBank Vermont City Marathon. Sam Davis is a running coach who works for VCM. He teaches a course on the 13.1 mile distance. They both appeared on The :30 to talk about the half-marathon. Watch the video from The :30 for more.
