I’ve been coming to FirstRun Burlington pretty much since the beginning back in the late 1980′s. For many years I ran…not every year but I bet if I went back through my old training logs I’d have made it to most FirstRun Burlington’s over the years. Then in 2005 RunVermont started producing this race so unfortunately I went from the runner side of the table to the other side. As relates to 2012, all I can say is “where did you all come from?!”
In the early days, FirstRun Burlington used to draw maybe a couple hundred runners. I remember plenty of years where it was 75-100 of us. In 2005 when RunVermont first assumed production duties, 345 runners came to this race. 2005-2006-2007 were about the same. In 2008 we jumped up to 481 entrants and 429 finishers, and I remember our staff talking about “have we hit our maximum?” We decided one of the main reasons to put on this race is to encourage everyone to come out on New Years Day to get in some exercise and try to start the year off on the right foot with good healthy fitness habits, so we really didn’t want to put a cap on things. For 2008-2009-2010 we were pretty stable on entrants, right around 500. Last year, entries jumped to 710.
Coming into this year we optimistically hoped we could bring out at least as many runners as last year. The last time this race was on a Sunday, 2006, was one of only 2 years entries have gone down from the year before, since we started anyway. (The other year that entries decreased was 5° and windy). This year over 900 of you signed up! And that doesn’t even count the kids who ran in the 1/2 mile and 1 mile races.
I want to thank all the runners for being in such good spirits at the finish line. Trying to process you all through as quickly as we could was a massive challenge. We currently have results set for all finishers up to about 28:00. Over the next few days we’ll keep plugging away, trying to sort out all the results. For those of you who finished after 28:00 or so, you have our deepest apologies for the snafu and my pledge that we’ll keep working through our documents to try to get all of your results in.
In the meantime, we have lots more pictures for you to check out. There are 230 on our Facebook page (we’ll also post them on our Flickr group page. We would love you to share yours on either page.) In addition, we worked with SkiPix to provide you with professional race course shots. They’re processing the 900+ images they took, but have a great set of teasers here for you to enjoy.
From the RunVermont staff, we wish you many miles and many smiles in 2012. May this year be filled with healthy running and fast times.
