Congrats to Kathy who won last week’s GIVEAWAY and to David Raleigh from St. Albans who won the first of three drawings in the Key/Hannaford Sweepstakes!
If you haven’t run in to your local (Vermont) KeyBank branch to register for the sweepstakes, you still have a little time. In late April one winner will take home a Kindle Fire and a $100 Hannaford gift card. The grand prize winner (drawn in mid-May) will take home:
- Apple iPad 2 64MG with WiFi
- $200 Hannaford gift card
- KBVCM prize pack that includes 2 VIP passes!
You do not need to need to be a KBVCM participant to enter! All entrants receive a $2 Hannaford coupon upon entry, while supplies last.
Thanks to everyone who brought your nutrition-related questions to our live Facebook event last week and especially to Kris Lindsey, Hannaford Nutritionist, for moderating and providing answers.
Our nutrition chat generated some great questions last week! To recap, here’s a quick review of the most popular topics with some great links for further learning. – Kris Lindsay
Chocolate milk as a recovery drink:
Because chocolate milk provides a good mix of carbohydrates, protein, fluid and electrolytes, it has been identified as a recovery drink. Other options also provide this recovery mix, including commercial drinks, homemade drinks, and water combined with a good snack! Take your pick.
Protein Intake:
Endurance athletes need 1.2 to 1.4 grams or protein per kg of body weight per day. Here’s a great booklet on protein and activity and the American College of Sports Medicine’s Statement on Nutrition and Athletic Performance.
Portion Control:
Mike L. asked how to combat larger appetites following a long training run. This is normal as the body tries to recover its lost energy. To curb eating too many calories, try filling up on high fiber foods such as fruits and vegetables and eat slowly to ensure adequate time for chemical satiety messages in the stomach to reach the brain – all while making sure adequate protein is consumed for muscle repair.
How to build a balanced meal.
What to eat before, during and after endurance events:
The following links provide some recommendations and ideas! I

Pasta with homemade meatballs and sauce is my go to pre key run dinner. For meatballs I use half turkey half beef and I throw in shredded zucchini, mushrooms, onions, carrots, garlic, parm cheese and panko breadcrumbs, plus two eggs and milk to bind. I make up two dozen of these balls and freeze most of them for later use. Sorry for no specifics, just experiment I say!

Spicy Chicken Rigatoni (apparently a Utica, NY regional specialty), replacing the chicken w/ spicy veggie sausages. Super tasty.
