The Franklin County Regional Chamber of Commerce presents the Second Annual St. Albans Raid Half Marathon on Sunday, September 21, beginning promptly at 9:00 am. The Race starts on Main Street in downtown St. Albans, directly in front of Twiggâs Gastropub. This yearâs race coincides with the 150th Anniversary of the Raid on St. Albans and a huge celebratory weekend is planned!
A volley of Union and Confederate gunshot will start the race, as a throng of mask-wearing runners hit the streets of St. Albans, running the same route Confederate bandits took in October, 1864, after robbing the St. Albans Bank, the Franklin County Bank and First National Bank. The route is a traditional 13.1 mile half marathon that begins just outside the first bank looted by the Confederate gang, and heads out of town and onto the historic Rail Trail. An out-and-back course, the terrain is rolling and mostly gravel. It will be monitored for safety and marked with numerous water stations. Post-race, runners and their friends and families are invited to join the celebration for food and awards.
This yearâs runners will be treated to a full-scale celebration in honor of the 150th Anniversary of the original St. Albans Raid. Runners and spectators should expect rowdy crowds of costumed onlookers, an encampment of Civil War re-enactors living in beautiful Taylor Park, era-appropriated games and music, musket skirmishes and gun duels, capped off with a live reenactment of the original Raid, performed by company of professional actors.Main Street start, downtown St. Albans Vermont
