Hi Michelle-
Sorry you didn't get chosen in the 2-Person lottery. I wish we had more room on the course and in the Exchange Zones to bump up the relay team numbers but unfortunately we are limited.
A 5-Person Relay Team can have 2 to 5 runners (we say 3-5 so that people don't confuse it with a 2-Person Relay Team, but in reality we will allow 2 runners on a 5-Person Team). The only requirement is that any team entered in the 5-Person Relay can only exchange their wristband in the 5-Person Relay Exchange Zones. It is not permissible for a 5-Person Relay Team to make an exchange at the 2-Person Relay Exchange Zone at Oakledge Park or at any location outside the 5-Person Relay Exchange Zones.
The relay legs for the 5-Person Relay are approximately these distances (miles): 3.1, 5.8, 6.4, 5.4, 5.5. Any 5-Person team that has less than 5 runners can split those legs up however they want. For a team that has 3 runners that are evenly matched we most often see Runner A do legs 1 and 2, Runner B do leg 3, and Runner C do legs 4 and 5. For a 5-Person team with only 2 runners most often Runner A will run the first 3 legs (15.3 miles) and Runner B will run the last 2 legs (10.9 miles).
I hope this information is helpful. Good luck with the transfer board, hope it works out and we see you at the start line in May. Any questions feel free to post a follow up here.
